Tavis Smiley will bring “Death of A King: A Live Theatrical Experience” to Chicago in January, it was announced Tuesday.

Based on Smiley’s best-selling book, “Death of A King” combines live music and narration by Smiley to tell the story of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.’s final year and commemorate the upcoming 50th anniversary of King’s death. Joining and accompanying Smiley will be jazz pianist Marcus Roberts.

The one-night-only performance of “Death of A King” is slated for 7:30 p.m. Jan. 20 at the Chicago Theatre, 175 N. State St.
