Two Oak Park police officers were hospitalized early Thursday morning after their squad cars collided while attempting to respond to a traffic stop.

According to the village of Oak Park, the crash occurred at 3:30 a.m. at the intersection of Adams Street and East Avenue, just south of Madison Street.

Both officers were responding to a call for assistance from another officer conducting a traffic stop when they collided, officials said.

According to village officials, both officers were able to exit their respective cars, report the crash via radio and request medical assistance. Both officers were taken to Loyola Medical Center in Maywood, officials said.

As of Thursday afternoon, one officer had been released from the hospital. The other officer remained at Loyola to undergo tests to determine the extent of his injuries, which are not considered life-threatening.

One squad car was traveling north on East Avenue while the other squad car was traveling west on Adams Street, officials said. The two cars collided in the intersection of the four-way stop.

According to village officials, the northbound squad car came to a rest in the intersection, and the westbound squad car struck a parkway tree on the south side of East Avenue and slid west on the parkway before coming to a complete stop.

According to police officials, an investigation is ongoing.
