St. Charles Ald. Bob Gehm, Ward 3, is stepping down from the City Council, the city of St. Charles said on Tuesday. His resignation was effective May 1.

Gehm had served on the City Council since 2023, according to a news release from the city. After first being appointed, he was then elected to the seat in 2025. He’s also served on the Liquor Control Commission since 2013, per the city.

St. Charles is divided into five wards, each with two City Council members. Gehm’s term as one of the two Ward 3 members of the City Council was set to expire in 2027.

“(Gehm) has a genuine commitment to give back to his community,” St. Charles Mayor Clint Hull said in the news release. “His leadership, kindness and dedication have made St. Charles even better.”

Gehm declined a request for comment.

His resignation was also recognized at Monday’s City Council meeting, at which Hull and members of the council expressed gratitude for Gehm’s time serving the city.

“What I love the most about (Gehm) is his enthusiasm, his optimism,” Hull said at the meeting, recalling how Gehm said he would always stop and talk to city employees out working.

Calling him a “consummate gentleman,” Ald. Steve Weber, Ward 5, said Gehm “cared tremendously for his constituents.”

“He’ll be missed,” Ald. Bryan Wirball, Ward 4, added.

Now, the city is seeking applicants interested in filling the now-vacant seat on the council.

The candidate is to be appointed by Hull, with the support of the City Council, according to the city. The person appointed to the seat would serve until a candidate is elected in April 2027.

Residents interested in being considered must have lived in Ward 3 for at least one year, the city said in the news release. They must also be available for a half-hour interview on June 1 between 4 and 6:30 p.m. and be available to serve starting on June 15.

Individuals who are interested in applying to fill the vacancy must submit a letter of interest and resume to Hull by 4 p.m. on May 25, the release said. Materials can be dropped off at City Hall, mailed to 2 E. Main St. in St. Charles or emailed to msheets@stcharlesil.gov.
