A 31-year-old man is accused of fatally shooting a Maywood man earlier this month on the West Side, Chicago police said.

A judge on Sunday denied bail for George I. Jernigan, 31, of the 1800 block of North McVicker Avenue, in the city’s Galewood neighborhood.

Jernigan, who is charged with murder, was arrested in “association” with the fatal shooting of 30-year-old Anthony Collins on Nov. 19 in the 1600 block of North Mango Avenue, said Officer Christine Calace, a Chicago police spokeswoman.

About 1:50 p.m. that day, an assailant fired shots hitting Collins in the groin area before fleeing. The attack was believed to be gang related, police said.

Earlier, police said Collins, of the 1900 block of 6th Avenue in Maywood, accidentally shot himself.

Collins was pronounced dead at 2:28 p.m. Nov. 19 at Loyola University Medical Center in Maywood, according to the Cook County medical examiner’s office.

An autopsy Nov. 20 determined Collins died of a gunshot wound to the groin and his death was ruled a homicide, according to the medical examiner’s office.
