The loss of a loved one can feel especially difficult at the holidays. While some find comfort in the traditions and the memories they carry of the one they are missing, others find it too painful to continue these traditions without them.

Griefshare‘s, “Survival Tips for Handling the Holidays,” suggests planning ahead as much as possible. Thinking about what traditions and events will be difficult can help you prepare for some of the emotions and can also let you decide ahead of time if you want to be a part of the events.

The National Funeral Directors Association suggests repeating the word “no!” and feeling the freedom to turn down parties and gatherings and, if necessary, explaining that it is too difficult this year.

Griefshare also says accepting that the holidays are going to be difficult and realizing that it is a season that will pass can be a helpful tool as well.

For some, acknowledging the loss at the holidays is helpful to the grieving process. The website whatsyourgrief.com has a list of suggestions on how to keep a loved one’s memory alive and celebrate their life during the holidays including putting a special ornament on the Christmas tree, keeping a place setting for the deceased at the holiday table or giving a special gift to a beloved charity in their honor.

For those who lose a loved one at the holidays, funeral directors, such as the family and staff at Friedrich-Jones and Overman-Jones funeral homes in Naperville and Plainfield, are gifted in helping family and friends through the process, even helping them decide if they will incorporate Christmas traditions into the services.

The funeral homes have hosted a Memorial Luminary Program for 20 years to help those grieving during the holidays. In addition their website, www.friedrichjones.com, invites you to light a virtual candle in memory of someone you lost, in hope for someone you know is hurting, or to send a comforting message to someone special.
