The organizers of the Melbourne Air & Space Show have paid tribute to the Air Force Thunderbirds pilot who died earlier this month in a training accident.
Maj. Stephen Del Bagno, call sign Cajun, flew the No. 4 F-16 for the Thunderbirds when they performed in Melbourne at the end of March.
He died during training maneuvers at Nellis Air Force Base in Nevada on April 4. The Melbourne show was his only performance with the precision aerobatic team. It was his first year with the Thunderbirds.

In a gesture to commemorate Bagno, an emblem with a black ribbon, a Thunderbirds logo and Bagno’s No. 4, was created at the spot where the nose wheel of his F-16 was parked when he performed.
Bryan Lilley, Chairman of the Melbourne Air & Space Show, worked with Anthony Soland at local graphic design company Standard Collective Studio and had the logo installed at Apex Executive Jet Center adjacent the Orlando Melbourne International Airport.
“Since Melbourne was the only show Cajun got to perform at we wanted to find a special way to remember him now and for years to come,” Lilley wrote on his Facebook page. “Now the memory of Cajun is part of the place where he inspired so many people.”

The Thunderbirds this week returned to training after taking time off after Bagno’s death.
“While our hearts are still heavy with the loss of our wingman Cajun, we know he’d want us back in the air and preparing to recruit, retain and inspire once more,” said team leader Lt. Col. Kevin Walsh.
The team had to cancel their performance at the Fun ‘n Sun air show in Lakeland last week, and also as of April 26 canceled their planned return to Florida for the Fort Lauderdale Air Show on May 5-6. They are still slated to perform this fall at the Wings Over Homestead at Homestead ARB on Nov. 3-4. They opened their air show season on March 24-25 in Melbourne and also did a flyover at the Daytona 500.
