I do not know which of President Donald Trump’s character flaws disturb me the most; his dishonesty, narcissism, cruelty and racism certainly cause me to cringe.
The one flaw which does not receive as much attention as those mentioned is his vindictiveness, particularly toward anyone who is critical of him. He has shown just how vindictive he can be in the comments he has made about U.S. Sen. John McCain. He started in the campaign when he said McCain was not a war hero because he was captured. This came from a person who had four deferments while in college and another for bone spurs.
When McCain was diagnosed with terminal brain cancer, Trump did not express any concern, but instead later criticized him for voting against the repeal of Obamacare.
Most recently Congress decided to honor the senator by passing the John S. McCain National Defense Authorization Act. When he signed the act, Trump did not mention McCain’s name. Later on the same day in another forum, he again criticized him for voting against the repeal of Obamacare.
McCain has served our country with unbelievable courage as a war hero and with great distinction and integrity as a senator for more than 30 years. It is indeed sad that Trump does not have the decency to recognize that service, particularly at a time when McCain is fighting for his life.
