A 24-year-old Westchester woman was injured Saturday afternoon when she was struck by an eastbound Metra train at Harlem Avenue in Chicago, near Elmwood Park, a Metra spokesman said.
Her injuries were not considered to be life-threatening, Metra spokesman Michael Gillis said.
He said that at about 12:50 p.m. Saturday, witnesses said the woman was walking south on Harlem Avenue as a Metra train approached from the west. Despite the gates being down, witnesses reported that she headed across the tracks in an apparent attempt to cross before the train arrived, he said.
Gillis said she was taken to Loyola Medical Center in Maywood. According to an Elmwood Park police incident report, she was taken by Elmwood Park Fire Department paramedics. The report stated that the Elmwood Park Police Department assisted with traffic and crowd control. Gillis said the tracks reopened about an hour later.
