
Firefighters Memorial Plaza fundraiser
ServPro of Elgin and Northwest Kane County will host a Firefighters Memorial Plaza benefit from noon to 4 p.m. Sunday, Aug. 4, at the Elgin Fire Barn, 533 St. Charles St., Elgin.
The event includes food trucks, music, historic and active fire engines, and fire barn museum tours.
Proceeds will help fund the future Firefighters Memorial Plaza to be located at the Elgin Fire Barn No. 5 Museum. The memorial will honor Elgin-area firefighters as well as firefighters from across northern Illinois.

Touch-a-Truck at Elgin library
A Touch-a-Truck event is set for 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. Monday, Aug. 5, at the Gail Borden Main Library, 270 N. Grove Ave., Elgin.
Families are encouraged to bring a picnic dinner, and children can explore an Elgin fire truck, police car and more.
Children can bring in their summer reading logs to receive prizes.

Free dental care for children
Families have until Wednesday, Aug. 7, to register for a free dental exam for children 5 and younger.
Delta Dental of Illinois Foundation, the Elgin Community College’s dental assisting program, and Greater Elgin Family Care Center are is offering a free day of dental care as part of its Dentist By 1 program.
The exams will take place between 8 a.m. and 2 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 10, at the Elgin Community College Dental Assisting Clinic, 1700 Spartan Dr., Elgin. Volunteer dental teams will provide free preventive and diagnostic services, including cleanings, exams, fluoride treatments, sealants and X-rays.
Children will receive a free toothbrush, toothpaste and floss.

Bat watch program
A naturalist will lead a free program on bats as part of the Kane County Forest Preserve District’s Nighttime Nature Series.
Bat watch is set for 7:45 p.m. Friday, Aug. 16, at the Burnidge Forest Preserve, 38W235 Big Timber Road, Elgin.
The program is free, but advance registration is required.
