Roosevelt University graduate students Loryn Kimbrough and Rolonda Washington were named the 2019-20 winners of the Illinois Board of Higher Education’s Diversifying Faculty in Illinois Fellowship Award.

Kimbrough, 36, a master’s in Clinical Mental Health student from Blue Island, wants to be a college professor. Washington, 23, a master’s in Public Administration student from Chicago’s South Shore neighborhood, is aiming to become a higher education counselor and program administrator.

Both will receive an estimated $12,000 award from the state of Illinois thanks to recommendations from mentors they met while in college.

Professional Women’s Network lauds ‘Ignitors’

The Professional Women’s Network honored “Ignitors” with the Ignitor Award at its 2019 Summer Soiree on July 30.

The honorees included Maribeth Hearn, April Odom, Dr. Lynette Stokes, and Jennifer E. Stoner. In addition, the iCan Dream Center, represented by Evisha Ford-Sills, was recognized.

Hearn is vice president of the Inertia Group and director of the Career Success Center at the University of St. Francis. Hearn also has served two terms as PWN president.

Odom is a nurse practitioner for Walgreens and owner of the Physicals Plus Wellness Center in Crete.

Stokes is president of South Suburban College, the first female and the first African American to serve in that role.

Stoner, owner of J. Stoner Marketing in Tinley Park, served two terms as a PWN board member, handling the public relations for PWN during her tenure.

The iCan Dream Center is a non-profit organization located in Hazel Crest that provides programming for youth age 12-21.

Local graduates from U.S. Air Force basic military training

U.S. Air Force Airman 1st Class Destiny Lyons (Lincoln-Way West 2018) graduated from basic military training at Joint Base San Antonio-Lackland, San Antonio, Tx.

She completed an intensive, eight-week program that included training in military discipline and studies, Air Force core values, physical fitness and basic warfare principles and skills.

Airmen who complete basic training also earn four credits toward an associate in applies science degree through the Community College of the Air Force.
