Chicago Teachers Union gets support from Elizabeth Warren and Joe Biden, will continue walkout because ‘we have not landed on just terms yet’

The CTU — which received a visit from Elizabeth Warren to the picket lines Tuesday along with a call of support from Joe Biden — reported late Tuesday that there was “good conversation” at the bargaining table but not enough progress for members to end the strike. Also Tuesday, the CTU has asked for a show of solidarity on Thursday by having people wear red and post messages of support on social media — another indication that the walkout could continue at least into that day as well.

“Everyone in America should support you in this strike,” Elizabeth Warren tells crowd at elementary school in the South Austin neighborhood.

Chicago Mayor Lori Lightfoot’s budget plan seeks to avoid property tax hike with help from Springfield to close $838 million deficit

Mayor Lori Lightfoot will step to the microphone in City Council chambers to deliver her first budget speech this morning with plenty of questions hanging over a 2020 spending plan that will detail her roadmap for filling an $838 million hole. So far, Lightfoot publicly has identified $260 million in budget gap solutions. That leaves about $578 million the mayor hasn’t yet said how the administration will fill.

2 Chicago cops convicted of stealing cash and drugs with bogus search warrants

After a two-week trial and five hours of deliberation, a Chicago police sergeant and an officer under his command were convicted by a federal jury of betraying their badges by lying to judges to obtain search warrants and then stealing drugs and cash they found during raids. The most serious charge carries a sentence of up to 20 years in prison.

Top cop Eddie Johnson will skip Trump’s Chicago speech to police chiefs

Chicago police Superintendent Eddie Johnson will be hosting the International Association of Chiefs of Police conference in town next week, but he’s going to skip President Donald Trump’s speech, according to a spokesman. Trump addressed the organization last year in Florida, where he took aim at Chicago, one of many times he has criticized the city over its crime problems.

“What the hell is wrong with you?” Rep. Bobby Rush asked after Trump compared the impeachment inquiry he faces to a “lynching.”

Yesterday it was Elizabeth Warren. Next week it will be President Trump. In both cases, they’re bringing their campaigns to Chicago.

A 1-in-a-million shot enters a West Side bedroom, mortally wounding an 11-year-old girl. ‘They just shot Shamiya!’

Testimony began Tuesday in the trial of the slaying of 11-year-old Shamiya Adams, struck by a bullet fired from outside as she attended a July 2014 sleepover inside a friend’s house on Chicago’s West Side. Prosecutors allege Tevin Lee, then 18, was seeking to avenge the beating of a friend’s brother earlier that same day when he opened fire at a group of boys outside Jones’ apartment on Chicago’s West Side.

Youngest victim of last weekend’s Chicago violence had been a freshman at school where loss is nearly constant. ‘My students are brave warriors.’

Holy Cross Hospital — losing $2 million a month — is suspending labor and delivery services and slashing its bed count

Holy Cross Hospital is cutting more than half its beds, amid financial challenges facing a number of hospitals. It will now have fewer than 110 beds as the hospital in Chicago’s Marquette Park neighborhood struggles with lower reimbursement rates from government health insurance programs and a shift in service to outpatient care.
