From baking to vaccinating.
“Great British Baking Show” (or “Great British Bake Off” if you’re in the U.K.) judge Prue Leith took to Twitter Tuesday morning to announce she’d just received Pfizer’s highly anticipated coronavirus vaccine.
“Who wouldn’t want immunity from #Covid19 with a painless jab?? #vaccine,” the restaurateur and chef, 80, captioned a photo of herself wearing a mask and statement necklace as she received the shot.
Leith isn’t just the first high-profile celebrity vaccinated with Pfizer’s shot, which is about 95% effective against the lethal virus with no negative side effects, according to the drugmaker. She’s among the first to be vaccinated at all outside of trials.
The South African-born TV personality was inoculated just a week into the U.K.’s widespread vaccination effort, which began last Tuesday, mere days after the country became the first to issue emergency authorization for Pfizer and BioNTech’s jab.
Margaret Keenan, a 90-year-old grandmother was jabbed in Coventry, England, is the first to have been vaccinated with Pfizer’s shot, outside of trial participants.
“It’s the best thing that has ever happened,” the retired shop clerk from North Ireland told reporters last Tuesday, following her landmark shot. “If I can have it at 90, then you can have it, too.”
Health Secretary Matt Hancock said at the time that elderly people in nursing homes and frontline health workers would receive the first 800,000 doses, with additional health and care staff as well as people over 80 just behind.
The FDA on Friday approved the vaccine for emergency use in the U.S. as well and the first shipments arrived Monday.
