9/11 terrorist attack survivor to speak at brew pub fundraiser
Ryan Yantis, a retired Army lieutenant colonel who survived the 9/11 terrorist attack on the Pentagon, will be speaking at Black & Gray Brewing Co. in East Dundee on Saturday, Sept. 11, in a fundraiser for the East Dundee Firefighters Association.
Yantis, who now lives in Crystal Lake, was working as an Army public affairs officer 20 years ago when the plane hijacked by terrorists crashed into the Pentagon. He helped other people get to safety and to the medical care they needed.
Yantis’ talk is free and open to the public. Donations will be accepted, and 10% of the day’s sales receipts will be donated to the East Dundee Firefighters Association.

Free shredding event set for Sept. 25 at Dundee center
State Sen. Cristina Castro, state Rep. Anna Moeller and KCT Credit Union are holding a free personal document shredding event from 9 to 11 a.m. Saturday, Sept. 25, at the Dundee Township Park District Adult Activity Center, 665 Barrington Ave., Carpentersville.
Outdated documents like bank statements, medical bills and pay stubs should be shredded to prevent identity theft. Only paper documents will be accepted and staples and small paper clips do not have to be removed before disposal.

Applicants sought for Carpentersville boards, commissions
Carpentersville is seeking residents to serve on three appointed boards or commissions.
One person is needed to fill an opening on the Police Pension Board, which administers the police pension fund for retired police officers and surviving spouses, children and other dependents of deceased officers. Meetings are generally held the third Tuesday of January, April, July, and October.
The Board of Police and Fire Commissioners has one opening. The board conducts exams for police officer and firefighter applicants. Meetings typically take place the second Tuesday of each month.
There is one opening on the Planning and Zoning Commission, which holds public hearings on zoning matters, reviews subdivisions and other land use plans, and maintains the village’s comprehensive plan. Meetings are generally the third Thursday of every month.
Applicants must be a Carpentersville resident for at least one year, able to commit to making a majority of the meetings, and have qualifications needed to be an asset to the board or commission.

COVID-19 vaccination clinic to be offered at family Fringe Fest
The Kane County Health Department will hold a COVID-19 vaccination clinic from 8 to 11 a.m. Saturday, Sept. 4, as part of the Elgin Fringe Festival’s Family Fringe event at Elgin Civic Center Plaza, 150 Dexter Court, Elgin.
Which vaccine is available will depend on the availability from suppliers, a news release said.
Kane also has standing vaccination clinics from 1 to 5 p.m. every Wednesday and 9 a.m. to noon every Saturday at the KaneVax Hub, 501 N. Randall Road in Batavia. Appointments can be schedules online at KaneVax.org but walk-ins are welcome.
All three vaccine types are available to adults, and Pfizer vaccinations to anyone ages 12 to 18 with the completion of a form by a parent or guardian.
Vaccinations will also be available from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Sept. 10 and Oct. 1 at Gail Borden Public Library in downtown Elgin. The Elgin Area Pandemic Assistance Team will operate the clinics and the vaccine as well as seasonal flu shots.

Volunteers needed for tree grove project in Elgin forest preserve
Elgin Breakfast Rotary Club is seeking volunteers to assist with the completion of a tree grove planting project in the Fitchie Creek Forest Preserve in Elgin.
The work, which includes backfilling holes, setting up watering bags and laying mulch around 100 trees, will be done from 9 a.m. to noon Saturday, Sept. 19. Volunteers will need to bring their own shovels and rakes.
