Free health testing, vaccines available

The Gary Health Department will be offering free confidential testing from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Monday. Those in attendance can be tested for HIV, STDs, TB and COVID, and common childhood vaccines (DTaP, MMR, etc.) will be available as well as the COVID vaccine for all ages.

There will be refreshments, entertainment and prizes. The health fair will be held in the east side parking lot of the health department, located at 1145 W. 5th Avenue in Gary.

Gary offers additional cooling centers

The City of Gary has worked with city partners to offer additional cooling centers when the temperatures reach 88 degrees or higher. The Emergency Preparedness Coordinator will activate the cooling centers.

Locations include the Gary Public Library at 220 W. 5th Ave. Hours are Monday through Thursday from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. and Friday and Saturday from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m., closed Sunday.

The Calumet Township office at 1900 W. 41st Ave., will operate as a cooling center Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. and Brothers Keeper at 2120 Broadway also will be available Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Residents who need a ride to a cooling center can utilize a GPTC bus free of charge to get to a cooling center by using code 88. The driver will drop off those using the code to the nearest center.
