Park Ridge Police are investigating an incident of a child biting into a piece of Halloween candy that contained a needle, according to a department announcement Tuesday morning.

Police said in the press release a complainant called after their child found a needle inside a York Peppermint Patty with a Halloween-themed spider decoration on the wrapper.

The child had received the candy while trick-or-treating in an area bounded by Manor Avenue and Walnut Street from north to south and Parkside Avenue to Dee Road from east to west, police said. The area is on the north end of Park Ridge, roughly between Woodland Park and Franklin School.

Executive Officer Tom Gadomski told Pioneer Press in an email the child was not injured.

Gadomski said the department has not received any other reports of candy containing hazards as of Tuesday afternoon, Nov. 8.

Parents should check their children’s candy for indications of tampering on the package or wrapper, he said, and consider breaking the candy itself in half to check for inserted objects.
