Lake County authorities have charged a woman who was involved in a Jan. 8 gunfight at a Beach Park gas station.
Cyria Selvy, 23, of Zion, was charged with aggravated battery with a firearm and aggravated discharge of a firearm. The battery charge is a class X felony that carries a six-to 30-year prison sentence on conviction.
Selvy, who was wounded by gunfire, was being held in the Lake County jail in lieu of $300,000 bail, according to records.
Police say she pulled a handgun during an argument at about 6:30 a.m. that day and began firing, wounding a Waukegan man.
That man, Rigoberto Morales, also produced a gun and fired, and Selvy sustained two gunshot wounds, police said.
Morales was also charged and was being held in lieu of $150,000 bail.
Drug trafficking charges
An extensive investigation resulted in the arrest of a Winthrop Harbor man this month on drug trafficking charges, according to the Lake County sheriff’s office.
Alexander Thomas, 34, of the 600 block of Sheridan Road, was taken into custody after a search of his residence resulted in the seizure of heroin, cocaine and other drugs. He has been charged with unlawful possession of drugs with intent to deliver, the sheriff’s office said.
Thomas was the subject of a several-month investigation conducted by the sheriff’s Special Investigations Group and Winthrop Harbor police. The SIG is partially supported by the High Intensity Drug Trafficking Area (HIDTA), a federal law enforcement program.
“This is yet another example of the outstanding work conducted by the members of our Special Investigations Group,” Sheriff John Idleburg said. “Thanks to the federal HIDTA designation we received for the group, we have tremendous resources to continue investigating and apprehending drug traffickers, violent gang members, those using firearms to commit crimes against others, and human traffickers.”
Thomas was being held at the Lake County jail in lieu of $150,000 bail.

Veteran prosecutor Lauren Callinan was recently appointed first assistant state’s attorney in Lake County.
Callinan came to the state’s attorney’s office in 2008, has worked in every division and handled thousands of cases, including many high-profile prosecutions. In 2020, she was named to head the domestic violence unit at LCSAO.
She is the second woman to hold the post. Her immediate predecessor, Sharmila Manak, was the first woman to be first assistant. Manak was elected to a judgeship in November.
“Lauren will be an excellent first assistant as we continue to focus on violent crimes, increased cyber-crimes investigations, and enhanced victim services,’ State’s Attorney Eric Rinehart said in the LCSAO January newsletter.
” First Assistant Callinan has already led our efforts to improve our domestic violence prosecutions, and she was critical to implementing the office’s first law enforcement enhanced screening protocol,” Rinehart said. “In addition, Lauren has also been our primary point of contact with our partners: A Safe Place, Prairie State Legal Services, and North Suburban Legal Aid Clinic — all of which provide first rate legal services to survivors of domestic violence.”
