Two men involved in a downtown Elgin street fight in which two men were shot Friday night have been arrested on weapons and aggravated battery charges, Elgin police said.

It was one of three shootings to have occurred over the weekend in the city, according to reports.

The Friday incident began about 9:15 p.m. in the 100 block of East Chicago Street, near South Grove Avenue. Shots fired during the fight resulted in two men receiving non-life-threatening injuries that required hospital treatment, police reports said.

Santiago M. Sosa, 20, of the 100 block of East Chicago Street, was charged by the Kane County State’s Attorney’s Office with three counts of felony aggravated unlawful use of a weapon and one count of felony possession of a firearm without an FOID card.

Robert S. Waldsmith, 38, no address provided, Elgin, was charged with two counts of felony aggravated battery and one count of felony mob action.

Police provided no information on what instigated the fight, what type of injuries the victims sustained, how many shots were fired or other details pertinent to the incident.

Sosa was released on his own recognizance and Waldsmith’s bond set at $10,000.

At about 3 p.m. Saturday, May 20, a second shooting occurred in the area of North McLean Boulevard and Eagle Road. Police reponding to a shots fired call found a man who had been wounded, a police report said.

No details were released on the incident or the victim, other than he was taken to an area hospital for treatment of non-life-threatening injuries.

Detectives from the police department’s Major Investigations Division are investigating.

One day later, at about 8:50 p.m., Elgin police responded to a shots fired call in the 1000 block of Hunter Drive. Officers confirmed a weapon had been fired during a domestic-related incident but no one was injured and there was no threat to the public, reports said.

The case remains under investigation by the Major Investigations Division.
