Two Chicago police officers were shot Friday evening in the South Shore neighborhood, authorities said.

The two officers were shot around 5 p.m. near East 79th Street and South Chappel Avenue and transported to University of Chicago Medical Center, according to Chicago Fire Department spokesperson Larry Merritt. A civilian was also taken to the hospital, he said.

Their conditions weren’t immediately released.

While the circumstances of the shooting weren’t immediately clear, a police source with knowledge of the investigation indicated that shots were exchanged after a traffic stop. One officer was hit in the vest and the other in the arm, the source said.

The Civilian Office of Police Accountability confirmed it’s investigating an officer-involved shooting near 2000 East 79th Street.
