A Dyer man faces charges after allegedly tearing out a kitten’s fur.

Matthew S. Murphy, 35, of Dyer was charged Wednesday with cruelty to animals, a Level 6 felony. He posted a $500 bond.

His next court hearing is Sept. 11 before Magistrate Mark Watson.

Police were called at 12:28 p.m. June 7 to an apartment on the 11000 block of Wicker Avenue (U.S. 41) in Cedar Lake for an animal cruelty call. Reports also said the kitten’s skin was infected.

A witness told officers that they had pictures and saw a video after Murphy allegedly tore the feline’s fur out.

Murphy claimed the kitten had a spot it kept scratching.

Officers saw “open” wounds to the top of its back and shoulders. Animal Control retrieved the animal around 1:20 p.m.

Police arrested Murphy and took him to jail.
