Naperville’s 9/11 event to be at Shanower Memorial

Naperville’s remembrance ceremony marking the 22nd anniversary of the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks will be held at 6 p.m. Monday, Sept. 11, at the Cmdr. Dan Shanower Memorial behind the Naperville Municipal Center, 400 S. Eagle St.

The Naperville Municipal Band will play at 5:45 p.m.

This year’s speaker is Dan Bacso, founding member of American Pride Inc. and a survivor of the attacks on the World Trade Center. Remarks will also be given by Mayor Scott Wehrli, Police Chief Jason Arres and Fire Chief Mark Puknaitis.

The event also commemorates the 20th anniversary of the Shanower Memorial, named in tribute to Cmdr. Dan Shanower, a Naperville native and Navy officer who died in the Pentagon on Sept. 11, and honoring all those who died that day.

In the event of inclement weather, the remembrance will be moved inside the municipal center.

Naperville DAR to hold events for Constitution Week

The Naperville-area Daughters of the American Revolution will be observing Constitution Week from Sept. 17 to 23 with several local events.

The group’s Fort Payne chapter, which is located in Naperville, will kick off the week at 3 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 17, with Bells Across America at the Millennium Carillon, a news release said.

At 11 a.m. Monday, Sept. 18, Mayor Scott Wehrli will issue a proclamation for Constitution Week at the Naperville Municipal Center, and a celebratory ringing of a school bell will take place at 1:30 p.m. at Naper Elementary School.

All three branches of the Naperville Public Library will showcase informational displays about Constitution Week, the release said.

The Fort Payne Chapter has created a video that interviewed people in downtown Naperville about the Constitution. The video, which is new this year, will be on the group’s social media pages, including Instagram and Facebook.

Naperville Police Chief Jason Arres will be meeting with the public Thursday during an informal “Chat with the Chief” event.

High school students being sought for city boards

High school students who live within Naperville’s boundaries have until Thursday, Sept. 14, to apply for student positions on city of Naperville boards and commissions.

More than 20 positions are available on various boards, and all student representatives are invited to attend the Leadership Academy presented with KidsMatter.

Among the boards and commissions seeking teen members are the Historic Preservation Commission, Naper Settlement Museum Board, Naperville Public Library Board, Riverwalk Commission, Sister Cities Commission and Special Events and Community Arts Commission.

City officials recommend that students review the boards and commissions guide to see which one is a good fit and learn about the responsibilities and time commitment required.

Applications are available at naperville.il.us/boards. In lieu of a resume, students may submit a statement of interest that includes their year in school. While high school seniors receive preference, all high school students may apply, city officials said.
