A Zion child choked to death in what authorities said Friday was a tragic accident.

The Lake County coroner’s office said an autopsy indicated that Kyrie Burns, 5, died Sept. 23 of asphyxia.

Emergency responders were called to the family’s home in the 2100 block of Gilead for a report of a child not breathing. Police arrived and found the boy’s parents performing CPR on the child.

Police assisted until paramedics arrived and transported Kyrie to Vista East Medical Center. The child was pronounced dead in the emergency room.

The coroner’s office said Zion police conducted a full investigation with the cooperation of the parents.

“Evidence at the scene and a post-mortem autopsy conducted at the Lake County coroner’s office confirm that the child’s death was a tragic accident, and no foul play is suspected,” Coroner Jennifer Banek’s office said Friday.
