An Orland Fire Protection District firefighter was injured and briefly hospitalized Tuesday after working to extinguish a fire at an Orland Park home, according to the district.

The firefighter was treated for a knee injury at Silver Cross Hospital in New Lenox and released a short time later, according to the district.

The fire was reported just before 4 a.m. Tuesday in the 14700 block of Holly Court, and firefighters encountered heavy fire throughout both floors of the two-story home, according to the fire district.

The fire also spread to an adjacent home, and the flames were so hot that the wheels of a car parked in the driveway exploded, according to district fire Chief Michael Schofield.

The fire was brought under control after about 20 minutes, and the cause was under investigation by the fire district, Orland Park police and the Illinois State Fire Marshal.

“This fire was extremely dangerous but it was quickly extinguished,” Schofield said.

“Our firefighters are the best and they never hesitate to respond to emergencies,” the chief said. “We are thankful that the firefighter’s injuries were minor and that no other residents were injured.”

Firefighters remained on the scene to manage hot spots and flare-ups at the property.
