A Kenwood man was killed Thursday afternoon in a broad daylight shooting along the Hyde Park neighborhood’s bustling shopping district on the South Side, according to Chicago police.

The victim, a 29-year-old man, was quarreling with another man at Nichols Park in the 1300 block of East 53rd Street around 4:20 p.m. when the second man pulled a handgun and opened fire, striking the victim in the neck, authorities said.

The victim, Joseph Cook, was taken to UChicago Medicine where he was pronounced dead, according to the Cook County medical examiner’s office. An autopsy is scheduled for Friday.

The gunman fled on foot and wasn’t in custody Thursday afternoon, police said.
