Someone broke into the Brooklyn Park home of Democratic-Farmer-Labor state Rep. Melissa Hortman and her husband, Mark, days after the couple was slain there in what authorities are calling a political assassination.
Brooklyn Park police were alerted to the overnight break-in at 8 a.m. Wednesday. They discovered that someone had pried plywood off and broken the rear window to enter the Hortmans’ home.
The home appeared to have been searched by the person, but family of the Hortmans said they didn’t believe anything was missing. The family had removed valuable items from the house Tuesday.
After the Hortmans were shot and killed early Saturday, crime scene investigators processed the residence and collected all homicide-related evidence. The home was boarded up Sunday morning and a police trailer camera was placed at the front.
When asked whether there were security cameras inside the home, Brooklyn Park police spokesman Matt Rabe said they were not releasing that information at this time.
The Brooklyn Park Police Department is investigating the burglary and urging neighbors to check their security cameras from the past day. People can call 763-493-8222 with any evidence or information related to the incident.
