A South Side man is expected to appear before a judge on Wednesday after he was charged with firing into a vehicle late last month, striking an 8-year-old girl, according to Chicago police.

Kenneth Williams, 23, was arrested Monday at the Leighton Criminal Courts Building and later charged with attempted first-degree murder and aggravated battery related to the June 24 attack in the 3000 block of South State Street, police said in a news release.

Police said Williams, of the Washington Park neighborhood, was identified as the gunman who opened fire gunshots into the vehicle the girl and her family were riding in just before 10 p.m. that evening.

The girl was shot in the thigh and taken to Comer Children’s Hospital for a non-life-threatening injury.

Williams was scheduled to make an appearance at a detention hearing at the courthouse on Wednesday, police said.
