A house fire Sunday morning on Aurora’s East Side left a pet cat dead and another unaccounted for, according to a news release from the Aurora Fire Department.

On Sunday at around 11:09 a.m., the fire department responded to a fire on the 400 block of North Avenue in Aurora, the release said. Initial calls reported a home’s front porch fully engulfed in flames, with additional reports of heavy smoke and fire coming from the home.

Upon arrival, responding crews found that heavy fire had consumed the front porch and spread into the first and second floors and the attic, according to the news release. It had also burned through live power lines in the front yard, creating a safety hazard and damaging a fire hose, the release said.

Firefighters used multiple hose lines to contain the fire and gained entry to attack the fire from inside, the release said. A third alarm was ultimately called in, and the fire was brought under control in under 25 minutes.

A total of four engine companies, four truck companies, two medic units and four chief officers, amounting to 33 personnel, responded to the scene, the release said.

No injuries were reported, and a resident home at the time of the fire was able to evacuate after finding the porch in flames, per the release. Two cats were also reported to be inside. One was found dead, and the other was unaccounted for, officials said.

The home was ultimately deemed uninhabitable, the release said. Victim Services responded to assist the resident of the home, and the Red Cross was also contacted to provide support.

Fire investigators from the Aurora Fire Department and the State Fire Marshal’s Office are working to determine the cause of the fire, the release said.
