Chicago Blackhawks star center Connor Bedard reportedly will opt out of playing for Canada in the 2026 IIHF Ice Hockey World Championship this month. Bedard instead will use the time to nurse injuries suffered in the 2025-26 NHL season.
NHL insider Elliotte Friedman first reported the news.
Bedard suffered a separated right shoulder Dec. 12 in the final second of a 3-2 loss in St. Louis in what coach Jeff Blashill labeled a “freak accident.” He fell back in immediate pain after contact in a faceoff with Blues center Brayden Schenn with 0.8 seconds remaining.
Bedard, 20, missed the next 12 games before returning in early January. Friedman reported that Bedard wanted to play in the worlds — scheduled for May 15-31 in Switzerland — but chose to prioritize his health for Hawks training camp and beyond.
Bedard notably was left off the roster of Canada’s silver medalist team for the Milan Cortina Winter Olympics. The injury may have played a part in the decision, although former Hockey Canada general manager Doug Armstrong brushed off that notion.
Despite missing 13 games — one due to illness — Bedard recorded career highs this season in goals (30), assists (45) and points (75). It’s widely expected that he’ll sign an extension with the Hawks this summer and become their next captain.
The Hawks still might have some representation in the worlds. Scott Powers of The Athletic reported last week that forwards Oliver Moore and Sam Lafferty and defenseman Wyatt Kaiser are expected to play for the United States. Team USA’s first game is scheduled for May 15 against host Switzerland.
