The Gary/Chicago International Airport recently received an award for its “excellence” in the removal of snow and ice control during the past winter season.

An airport release said Thursday it won the Balchen/Post Award, bestowed by the Northwest Chapter of the American Association of Airport Executives.

It received the honor at the International Aviation Snow Symposium in Buffalo, N.Y.

The airport also won the award in 2019.

“We are extremely pleased to be recognized for our commitment to operations excellence, particularly given the extreme weather our airport and our hard-working snow crews experienced this past winter,” said Dan Vicari, airport executive director.

“Our snow crews train continuously to ensure they are prepared for any adverse weather condition, and this dedication to excellence is a key metric for the commercial, business, general aviation and cargo sectors to continue to see our first-class, modern snow and ice removal program.”

The award honors airports in commercial, general aviation and military categories. It’s named after Col. Bernt Balchen, an aviation pioneer who was the first to pilot an aircraft over both the North and South poles, and Wiley Post Jr., the long-time manager of the Allentown-Bethlehem-Easton Airport.
