Work will begin this summer on Naperville Road intersection improvements between Interstate 88 and Ridgeland Avenue, with daily lane closures expected, a DuPage County official said.
While the county is still determining the construction schedule for the Naperville project, the $8.9 million project should be substantially completed by November 2027, according to Steve Travia, director of the DuPage County Division of Transportation.
Multiple intersections will be expanded and enhanced, chief among them being the one at Naperville Road and Diehl Road, which is to be widened and resurfaced, Travia said. The northbound-to-westbound left-turn lane at the intersection will be converted to a dual left-turn lane configuration, he said.
Naperville Road/North Naper Boulevard at Ridgeland Avenue/Naperville-Wheaton Road is also to be widened and resurfaced. Naperville-Wheaton Road’s eastbound-to-northbound left turn will be converted into dual left-turn lanes, he said.
Traffic signals at each of the intersections will be upgraded as well.
“Roadway improvements on Naper Boulevard/Naperville Road will extend from immediately north of the Tower Crossing entrance to immediately south of the I-88 eastbound entrance ramp,” Travia wrote in an email.
He also noted that in collaboration with the city of Naperville, 450 feet of Diehl Road will be reconstructed, with additional resurfacing extending about 440 feet east of Freedom Drive.
There will be long-term lane closures throughout the project’s duration, with only one lane open in each direction, according to a DuPage County news release. Left-turn lanes will remain open. Message signs will be installed to alert motorists before construction starts.
The job is part of the DuPage County Division of Transportation’s 2026 Capital Program. More than $40 million in county and federal funding has been earmarked to “maintain existing infrastructure, while also implementing projects to improve safety and relieve congestion,” the release said.
Other large projects the county is tackling this year are:
- Replacement of the Warrenville Road bridge over the East Branch DuPage River in Lisle;
- Lemont Road intersection improvements in Woodridge and Darien, including traffic signal replacement at the intersections of 83rd and 87th streets;
- York Road reconstruction in Elk Grove Village and Bensenville.
In addition to the larger projects, the county plans to resurface nearly 45 lane-miles of DuPage roads, the release said.
“We want to make it easier for people to get around in DuPage County, whether it’s by car, via public transit, bicycle or on foot,” County Board Transportation Committee Chair Mary FitzGerald Ozog said in the release.
“This year’s transportation program aims to improve safety and accessibility, addressing important areas of need. Completion of these projects will help relieve congestion in heavily traveled areas, improving mobility for people who work and live here,” she said.
