Officials said a fight erupted during a lunch period Monday at Lake Central High School leaving both male juveniles injured and one facing possible charges.

In a letter to parents, Lake Central High Principal Erin Novak said one student was taken into custody by police.

“We understand that this may have caused angst among our students who were witness to the event. Please know that counselors are available tomorrow for anyone who would like to speak with one.”

St. John Police Chief Steve Flores said Tuesday the juveniles were ages 16 and 17.

He said the investigation remains ongoing and both teens sustained non-life threatening injuries and received treatment.

Flores said formal charges were pending against one of the juveniles at the Lake County Prosecutor’s office.

Novak told parents: “Lake Central High School will not tolerate physical aggression in our school. We thank St. John PD for their assistance and quick response with this situation. The safety of our students and staff is our top priority.”
