YWCA ELGIN PRESENTS AWARDS TO EIGHT WOMEN
Eight women were honored May 13 at the 42nd annual YWCA Elgin Leader Luncheon Awards at The Seville in Streamwood.
YWCA Elgin annually honors women in the community who strive toward its mission of empowering women and promoting racial justice in Elgin, a news release said. The event was attended by more than 400 people.
The leadership award recipients were:
- Rise Jones Award for the Arts: Selena Tapia;
- Marguerite Henry Communications & Technology Award: Leslie Wolko;
- Marie Grolich Social Service Award: Jen Keller;
- Myrtle Spiegler Gerberding Award for Public Service: Kristal Thompson;
- Betty Brown Racial Justice Award: Kristina Garcia;
- Marjorie Leonard Volunteer & Community Service Award: Tiffany Henderson;
- Beatrice Dorsey Business & Professions Award: Maria Manrriquez;
- Harriet Gifford & Hattie Griffin Education Award: Pietrina Probst.
The new 2026 Youth Leadership Award & Scholarship was presented to Mia Satterfield of Larkin High School in Elgin.
A professional portrait of each recipient will be taken by Ruben Ramos Photography in Elgin, a tradition that started in 1984, a news release said.
ELGIN NAMED BEST FOR RETIREE HEALTHCARE
Elgin has been ranked the best city in the United States for retiree healthcare by Investopedia, a financial news and information website.
Cities were evaluated on the number of ambulatory care establishments in the county or counties where they are located; number of hospitals in those counties; average star rating of those hospitals, based on Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services; and each state’s Medicare performance ranking, an Investopedia news release said.
“Elgin’s 61 hospitals and more than 10,000 ambulatory care establishments across Kane and Cook counties (Elgin is located in both) offset Illinois’ low Medicare performance ranking,” the website said.

POP-UP BOOK SALE AT GAIL BORDEN LIBRARY
The Gail Borden Public Library District Foundation will host a pop-up book sale from May 28 to June 2 during regular library hours in the lobby off the main branch, 270 N. Grove Ave., Elgin.
Books, CDs and DVDs will be available, with most items priced at $1 or $2, according to the library’s website. Proceeds will benefit the foundation and the support it provides the district, including sponsoring special events held throughout the year.

SENIOR ART SHOW AT RAKOW CENTER MAY 30
A free senior art show will be held from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday, May 30, in the Adult Activities Center of the Rakow Center, 665 Barrington Ave., Carpentersville.
The show will feature landscape paintings, floral arrangements, assorted wildlife graphics and whimsical illustrations, according to a Dundee Township Park District social media post. Artists will be showing and selling their original work or quality prints.
Refreshments will be available, and a raffle of artwork will benefit the Adult Activities Center.

HEARING, VISION SCREENINGS OFFERED BY LIONS
The Elgin Lions Club will hold hearing and vision screenings and collect sneakers for recycling from noon to 4 p.m. Saturday, May 30, at the Edward Schock Centre of Elgin, 100 Symphony Way.
The event is being held in conjunction with runners and walkers picking up their race packets for the Elgin Valley Fox Trot, which is being held May 31, Elgin Lions Club President Bonnie Kleinmark said.
One of the club’s main goals is to provide professional eye and hearing exams, glasses and hearing aids to people in need, she said.
