A 19-year-old man who shot three people — one fatally — while driving in Carpentersville was convicted Tuesday of first-degree murder and attempted murder in a Kane County bench trial, officials said.

Jimmy Medina, of the 200 block of Ensenada Drive in Carpentersville, was found guilty of firing multiple shots into a car as he and his cousin, Alan Medina, drove by it on Oct. 25, 2023, in the first block of Robin Road, according to a Kane County state’s attorney’s office news release.

The shots fired hit 17-year-old Anthony Aragon, of Carpentersville, in the head and killed him, the release said. A second victim was struck in the hip and required “extensive surgery” to recover and the third was grazed by a bullet, prosecutors said.

Two other people in the vehicle were not injured.

Alan Medina was the driver in the incident. His case is still pending, the release said.

Judge D.J. Tegeler scheduled Jimmy Medina’s next court appearance for Aug. 26. Medina will remain in the Kane County jail until his sentencing, where he faces 20 to 60 years in prison for first-degree murder and six to 30 years for attempted first-degree murder.

“This case is a tragedy that claimed the life of a 17-year-old and forever changed the lives of multiple victims and their families,” Assistant State’s Attorney Kelly Orland said in the release.

“I want to recognize the strength and resilience the victims and their loved ones have shown throughout this long process. While no verdict can undo the harm that was done, today’s finding of guilt against Jimmy Medina is an important step toward justice.”
