Evanston police have charged a fourth suspect in connection to an April 21 shooting on the 700 block of Howard Street that left a man suffering from non-life-threatening gunshot wounds, according to a news release from the Evanston Police Department.

Three other suspects, Nathaniel Washington Jr., 23, Cajmere T. Lemond, 19, and Arthur Mitchell Jr., 18, have been previously charged by the Cook County State’s Attorney’s Office in relation to the incident and have appeared in court as their respective cases move through the judicial process.

The fourth suspect, Damon W. Massie, 20, of the 100 block of Callan Avenue, Evanston, is charged by the Cook County State’s Attorney’s Office with one Class 4 felony count of mob action, the release said.

An arrest does not constitute a conviction.

Evanston police initially responded to reports of gunfire on the 700 block of Howard Street at 6:08 p.m. on April 21. Upon arrival, officers located evidence and residue of gunfire inside a local business, according to police.

Police then located a victim suffering from non-life-threatening gunshot wounds, and he was taken to the hospital via ambulance by first responders, police said.

Following the shooting, the Evanston Police Department’s Detective Bureau conducted an “extensive follow-up investigation” into the incident, including reviewing all available surveillance video, witness statements, additional physical evidence from the scene and other leads, police said.

That investigation led an Evanston detective to develop probable cause to charge Massie in connection with the shooting following the arrest of the three other suspects, according to the news release.

Members of the Evanston police Special Operations Group located Massie walking on the 600 block of Howard Street at approximately 7:18 p.m. on July 8. Under the provision of probable cause for arrest, detectives took Massie into custody without incident, police said.

Massie appeared at the Skokie Courthouse, 5600 Old Orchard Road, on July 9, at 9 a.m. in Room 105 for his detention hearing, according to the news release.

A judge ordered Massie detained until his next scheduled court appearance at the same location on Aug. 6, at 9 a.m.

While Massie’s arrest marks the latest development in the Howard Street shooting case, police said this remains an active  investigation.
