Twyla Tharp may be one of the world`s most exciting choreographers, but for dancers she can also be one of the most frustrating. Take ”The Fogue,”

an ironman drill that will be one of three Tharp pieces performed by the Hubbard Street Dance Company during a two-week stint, starting Tuesday, at the Civic Opera House.

The act takes three men through a boot-stomping, double-time exercise without music, a test that forces many dancers to constantly count throughout the piece. Other Tharp works include ”Baker`s Dozen,” a jazz ballet inspired by her experience with the movie ”Hair,” and ”Sue`s Leg,” a tribute to Fats Waller.

The Tharp pieces will be part of two different programs the Dance Company will give during this run. Other acts include Daniel Ezralow`s ”Read My Hips” (pictured here) and ”Diary,” a duet that features Kitty Skillman Hilsabeck, a long-time Hubbard favorite who is leaving the troupe.

”The Tharp Project”; Civic Opera House, 20 N. Wacker Dr.; Tuesday-March 23 (call for specific show times); $15-$32; 902-1500 (reservations recommended).
