A major shopping center that will contain Elk Grove`s second large grocery will be named Mallard Crossing when it opens in November, developers announced Wednesday.
Construction to turn 26 acres of farmland at Meacham and Nerge Roads into a shopping center will begin in March, according to Todd Berlinghof, a partner with developer Hamilton Partners of Itasca.
The plaza will house an Eagle Food Center, retail giant Wal-Mart, Parkway Bank, and up to 18 other retail shops.
Nearby residents opposed the center since its inception, saying it would create traffic problems and lower property values.
However, the center will also bring some competition into the village, where a Jewel Food Store on Biesterfield and Arlington Heights Roads is the only large grocery.
