Thirteen Chicago area tennis clubs have joined the Chicagoland Indoor Tennis Association to stage Tennithon VI, a benefit event to raise money for the Children`s Memorial Medical Center.
The event Feb. 21-22 is a tennis marathon for players ages 8 to 18. Each player raises funds through pledges based on hourly play and is eligible for prizes such as tennis racquets and trips to tennis resorts. Last year`s Tennithon raised more than $47,000.
”The tennis players don`t even have to be good or a member of the club,” said Gloria Shoff, executive director of the association. ”They just get out there, everyone gets fed, everyone gets a T-shirt and everyone has fun.”
Participating clubs include Mid-Town Tennis Club in Chicago, College Park Athletic Club in Bannockburn, Glenbrook Racquet Club in Northbrook, Lincolnshire`s Bath and Tennis Club, North Shore Racquet Club in Northbrook and Northbrook`s Tennis Club, the Barrington Club, Libertyville`s Tennis Club, River Trails Tennis Club in Arlington Heights, Woodfield Racquet Club in Schaumburg, Du Page Racquet Club in Addison, Hinsdale`s Racquet Club and Wheaton`s Sports Center.
To participate, call the association at 312-337-0145.
– Area runners can attend a preseason screening being offered by Lincoln Park Physical Therapy, 990 W. Fullerton, from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. Feb. 29.
Injury prevention and biomechanical analysis will be the focus of the screening, which costs $10.
”All the (experts) involved have given different screenings before,”
said Cathy Kujawa-Irwin, a physical therapist at the center. ”But we`ve never tried one this thorough for this specific a population.”
Flexibility and strength of each runner will be assessed, along with gait analysis, treadmill running analysis, body-fat testing and nutritional counseling.
