The Democrats and Republicans are ”spending liberally to lure young voters” (Feb. 24) because they think advertising can solve the political problem of ”apathy.”

The Tribune seems to agree. By calling my refusal to vote a form of

”apathy,” the writer of the story attempts to reduce my reasons for not voting to a form of civic ignorance, curable by happy talk about my ability to make a difference. It is strongly implied that voting itself might be defined as the act of choosing between a Republican or a Democrat.

But because I dislike Republicans and Democrats equally, I decline to select from a pool of candidates I oppose. And there will be no point in my voting for third-party or write-in candidates until they receive serious press coverage. My decision to boycott elections dominated by professional politicians and their professional sycophants, the press, is the opposite of an apathetic gesture.
