The chances of actually ousting Des Plaines` two top lawyers remain slim, despite a non-binding, no-confidence vote by a City Council committee.
Aldermen who oppose Mayor Michael Albrecht were able to pass the vote against City Atty. Judy Kolman and Corporation Counsel Burton Odelson recently, but whether they will be able to get more than a tie vote on the council floor Monday is uncertain.
The mayors` opponents say that Odelson has political connections to the mayor and Kolman is inexperienced.
Even if opponents do win a no-confidence vote in the council, it is the mayor who would have to decide whether to fire them, they say. And Albrecht has said he stands by the lawyers.
Ald. Carl Haupt said the vote is still worth taking to get some council members` objections to the lawyers on record. Haupt said the council has previously discussed no-confidence votes on Kolman four times and on Odelson six times without calling for a full council vote.
The committee voted 4-1, with one abstention, in favor of dropping the Evergreen Park firm of Odelson and Sterk, appointed by Albrecht, as corporation counsel.
Casting the only vote in favor of keeping Odelson was Ald. Jim Healy.
