Christmas came early to Roselle last weekend as more than 100 children and parents gathered at the Roselle Public Library for A Family Holiday Sing- Along. There were refreshments and a chance to welcome Santa Claus in what has become an annual tradition for area families.
”It`s our third sing-along,” said Cheryl Miceli, the event`s organizer. ”It`s a tradition when Santa comes to light the tree outside (the library).”
The cookies and candy were yummy, and it was fun to wear fabricated reindeer antlers and have your face painted with whiskers and a red nose. But, while it was jolly to belt out such seasonal songs as ”Here Comes Santa Claus,” these moppets had visions of the big man himself dancing about in their heads. ”Where does he park his reindeer?” 4-year-old Alex Engel of Roselle asked his mother, Julie.
In front of the library, some enterprising youngsters and one or two adults jockeyed for a place in line well before Santa`s scheduled arrival.
”I`m waiting for Santa with something important to ask him,” said 10-year-old Carolyn Smolinski. ”I know the spot, so I`m usually first in line.”
Cherry-faced cherubs with their moms and dads waited for Santa to drop in. Using a rather unorthodox mode of travel, Santa pulled up in a bright red fire engine.
”It`s strange, Santa coming on a fire truck,” said 8-year-old David Schauer of Glendale Heights. ”But seeing Santa was the best thing.”
The line of merry children wrapped itself around the front door of the library, waiting for their turn to sit on that rotund lap.
