A little April snowstorm meant Dusty Baker’s home debut in Chicago would have to wait at least one more day.
Mark McGuire, executive vice president of business operations, said the Cubs waited until Monday morning to postpone the game because they didn’t want to assume the forecast was correct.
Baker was unavailable for comment Monday. He was settling into his new office in the clubhouse, putting up pictures of his family and getting things in order.
Several Cubs showed up in spite of the postponement. Kerry Wood, Mark Prior, Joe Borowski and Mike Remlinger were among those putting items in their lockers and picking up luggage sent from Mesa, Ariz., on the team’s equipment truck.
Dannon Matthews, son of hitting coach Gary Matthews, had asked Baker earlier in the morning if he would ride his motorcycle to work on his first day at Wrigley.
“He said, ‘No chance,’ ” Matthews said. “I think he was a little nervous about the snow.”
