A group of Illinois certified public accountants has designed a free program to help military personnel and their families file tax returns and take advantage of tax benefits.
The Illinois CPA Society is providing tax guidance to active-duty members of the armed forces by offering personal assistance in filing 2002 federal and state tax returns. The government allows military personnel in combat a filing extension of 180 days after they return.
“It’s making sure people know the extended benefits and exclusions they may qualify for because they have served in a combat zone,” said Elaine Weiss, president and CEO of the Chicago-based Illinois CPA Society. “We wanted to make sure that they got really competent advice from certified accountants upon their return.”
