An unidentified man was shot in the knee Friday by one of two Chicago police officers returning fire on the 600 block of North Avers Avenue, a police spokesman said.
No charges had been filed as of late Friday against the 23-year-old man, who was treated for his injury at Mt. Sinai Hospital, spokesman Pat Camden said.
Police went to the area early Friday morning after receiving a call that two men in a white Chevrolet pointed a gun at a pedestrian on the 700 block of North Lawndale Avenue, Camden said. Minutes later, police heard gunfire near the area, saw a white car on Avers Avenue and a man leave the car with a gun in his hand, Camden said.
“The offender fled through a vacant lot, turned and fired several shots, and the officers returned fire, hitting the suspect in the right knee,” Camden said. The man was arrested, and a machine pistol was retrieved, Camden said.
The two officers were determined to have acted within departmental guidelines in returning fire, he said.
The driver was being sought.
