Four of the world’s top marathons, including Chicago, will not participate in a world-ranking system proposed by the main sponsor of the New York City Marathon.
Directors of the London, Boston and Berlin races also said Tuesday the plan devised by Netherlands-based bank ING would create problems with their sponsors. Race directors also said the company did not consult them.
“Using an independent body is the only way to fairly and systematically implement such a ranking system,” Chicago director Carey Pinkowski said.
The plan was announced last week and calls for a system based on results over two years in 16 selected marathons.
