Lebanon’s pro-Syrian President Emile Lahoud pledged Wednesday to fight attempts to force his resignation.
He was reacting to calls for his departure from anti-Syrian groups during a demonstration Tuesday to mark the first anniversary of former Prime Minister Rafik Hariri’s assassination. The groups blame the Syrian government for Hariri’s death.
“The president is determined to live up to his oath until the very last moment of his constitutional mandate,” Lahoud said in a statement. His extended term ends in 2007.
