Control our borders

I usually agree with columnist Steve Chapman but not with his “Time to confront reality; Believing immigration enforcement can wall us off from people is in the realm of dreams” (Commentary, June 3). His argument is that since Mexicans and others can make 10 times as much money in the U.S. as they can in their home countries, there is not much we can do to stop them from coming here. He says that they “can also enhance our welfare.” If present trends continue, and if we can do little or nothing about it, think of what our country will be like 20 or 30 years from now due to the great spurt in our population. The whole country will probably look like California does today, and California and most of the Southwest will look like Mexico. The “melting pot” is not working as it once did as we are becoming increasingly a bilingual country — or even multilingual and multicultural. The reality, in my thinking, is that our country is headed for serious trouble if it does not get immigration under control. We will become the Disunited States.

I think it is totally incorrect to say that we can do little or nothing to control immigration. We are supposed to be the greatest nation on Earth and we can’t control our borders?

I fear that our government has visions of a North American Union and does not really want to control the borders or the flow of immigrants.

Helping veterans

Thank you for featuring “Medicine men for the 21st Century; Native American veterans face unique struggles upon returning home from war, including high rates of post-combat stress; Now a mix of modern and traditional medicine is helping them heal” (Page 1, June 4). It brought tears to my eyes to read of the trauma of our Native American military personnel identifying with their “enemy,” then facing the loneliness of the reservation upon returning to private life. At last our government is doing something spiritually healing for the original inhabitants of our land. Also thanks for printing good news on the front page!
