Pretzel Dog

The pitch: “Even hot dogs get extreme makeovers.”
First thought: A buttery strip of pretzel spiraled around a fantastic all-beef Nathan’s dog. No additional condiments needed. So juicy, it’s like biting into a water balloon.
On second thought: It’s not as crisp as it looks.

The pitch: “New York’s Favorite Pizza.”
First thought: Huge honkin’ calzone-ish pie (except strombolis are more strudel-shaped than half moons). Just-right golden crust — not too thin or thick. Ooey-gooey mozzarella cheese and garlicky spinach stuff the crust to the gills. With the side of tomato sauce, look, it’s the colors of the Italian flag! Mangia!
On second thought: The tomato sauce tasted a bit out-of-the-bottle for me, with more acidity than sweetness.

Kung Pao Shrimp
PANDA EXPRESS $3.95 (as a la carte entree)
www.pandaexpress.com
240 calories, 14 g fat, 640 mg sodium
The pitch: “Succulent shrimp sauteed with red bell peppers, crisp celery, zucchini and peanuts, all flavored with ginger and garlic in a spicy chili pepper sauce.”
First thought: Hotter than Hong Kong in August without air conditioning (which is hot — I know). Nice texture throughout, from the non-wimpy shrimp to the crunchy textures of the vegetables. Flecks of red pepper and bold garlic hit.
On second thought: Spicier than you’d think; it’s hazardous to eat this without rice.
McGrade: B+
