After Connecticut defeated Louisville 21-17 Friday, Big East Commissioner Mike Tranghese called Louisville athletic director Tom Jurich on Sunday, saying the referees erred during a disputed punt return for a touchdown by the Huskies early in the third quarter. Connecticut’s Larry Taylor made a fair-catch signal, but returned the punt 74 yards for a score.

“It doesn’t change anything that happened,” Cardinals coach Steve Kragthorpe said. “It was a factor in the game, but it wasn’t the only [one].”

*Georgia Tech tailback Tashard Choice will have surgery Tuesday to determine the severity of the knee injury he suffered Saturday against Army.. … After nearly a month on the bench, Drew Weatherford will return as Florida State’s starting quarterback for Saturday’s game against Duke.

*Brigham Young men’s basketball coach Dave Rose agreed to an extension that runs through 2010-11. The Cougars won the Mountain West Conference regular-season title last season and have won at least 20 games in each of the last two seasons. … All 16 teams in next year’s NIT Season Tip-Off will play four games under a new format that includes third- and fourth-round games at campus sites.
