The Los Angeles Police Department is scrapping its controversial plan to create a map detailing Muslim communities in the metropolitan area, bowing to the outcry among Muslims and others that the project was a thinly disguised form of racial profiling.
“We put it out there, it was rejected, it’s dead on arrival,” Police Chief William Bratton said Thursday after a two-hour meeting with members of the Muslim community, civil rights organizations and interfaith groups who had all criticized the plan.
