“The Nightman Cometh,” but not to Chicago. Where’s the love?
My spirits rose last week when I read that the cast of “It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia” planned to perform a live-theater adaptation of last season’s musical finale, “The Nightman Cometh,” in several cities beginning this week.
Earlier this year, the “Sunny” folks performed some of the songs from the episode at L.A.’s Troubadour club. It was so successful that concert promotion company Live Nation asked if they wanted to take it on the road.
And now they are, but none of those roads lead to Chicago. Where is the love?
I adore FX’s filthy comedy. “The Nightman Cometh” might be the most replayed TV episode ever in the RedEye offices. Since I really want the Nightman to cometh to Chicago — and I know you do too — I thought I’d start a little campaign to see if we can’t make it happen.
I can say without a doubt that Chicago loves “It’s Always Sunny.” Every time I wear my “Sunny” T-shirt from last year’s Comic-Con at Chicago street festivals, and most recently at Lollapalooza, people stop, stare and then say, “I love that show! Great T-shirt!”
(It’s the yellow T-shirt, the one with a cow creating a pile of manure made up of the heads of “Sunny” stars Rob McElhenney, Glenn Howerton, Charlie Day, Kaitlin Olson and Danny DeVito — just in case you want to say hello sometime. I’m the tall guy.)
Anyway, I’m crushed.
The cast members above, plus Mary Elizabeth Ellis (The Waitress) and Artemis Pebdani (Artemis) will perform “Nightman” in Boston, New York, Philadelphia, Seattle, San Francisco and L.A.
Not one single show in the Midwest? Again, where is the love?
Rob and Glenn, we had such a good time during our interview at this year’s San Diego Comic-Con. I was one of just a handful of reporters who you chatted with about the upcoming fifth season, which begins at 9 p.m. Sept. 17.
“That’s cool,” Rob said when I told him how my T-shirt gets such great reaction in Chicago.
Apparently it’s not cool enough.
I know the “Sunny” guys are deep into editing Season 5, as @Glenn(underscore)Howerton recently tweeted. But I still think they should do at least one Midwest show. So let’s make it happen, Chicago.
I thought I’d start a little campaign to see if we can’t make it happen.
Please tweet the heck out of Howerton(@Glenn_Howerton), McElhenney (@robmcel henney) and Charlie Day (@TheCharlieDay). Include #sunny2Chi in the tweets. Also, e-mail Live Nation and FX like crazy.
