If you’re hankering for a taste of Hawaii but can’t leave town this weekend, some of the Hawaii tourism folks are bringing the islands to the Chicago area.

On Saturday and Sunday, from 11 a.m. -4 p.m., the Chicago Botanic Garden in Glencoe will be the place to be to get a taste of all things Hawaii. Among the activities:

* Get an in-depth look into the ahupua’a (land division) system, the feather

lei used for royalty in ancient Hawaii, unique plants of Hawaii, and

la’au lapa’au (Hawaiian herbal healing) through free seminars.

* Sample the tastes of the islands, including Mauna Loa

Macadamia Nuts, Waialua Estate Cacao, Kauai Coffee, and Tisane –

Moloka’i Style Tea.

* Enjoy lei-making with fresh orchids and Molokai plumeria.

* Witness the pounding and making of poi and sample this staple food with dry aku (skipjack tuna).

* Learn new recipes at the Chef Garden Series chef demonstrations, using

ingredients flown from Hawaii.

Admission to the

Botanic Garden

is free, but if you drive there’s a $20 per car-parking fee.
